Part 4からPart 6は、ほぼエドワード朝に重なる時期に出版された著作で構成しました。20世紀初めのロンドンについて書かれている本ですが、これらの多くで著者の生年が1840年代から1860年代であることもあって、ロンドンの古い逸話とともに、「昔はこうだった」というような個人的な追憶を振り返る場面も多々あり、19世紀末の生活を振り返ってみることもできる内容です。
著者の多くは、都市が大きくなりすぎ、その生活様式も、一人の書き手、または単一のストーリーでは扱いきれないほどあまりにも複雑になってしまった、と指摘します。しかしながらここに集めた著作はすべて、自身が暮らす都市と時代の独特の「気風」を示そうとしたもので、新しい時代への変化の始まりの時の具体的な情報は現代の研究者にとってあらゆる点で興味深いものとなるでしょう。

帝国の「心臓」という表現はこの時代によく使われたロンドンの隠喩でしたが、まさにそうした「帝都ロンドン」、権力の高みにある「世界の首都」を、より包括的に書き記そうとした著作。作家でジャーナリストのArthur Henry Beavanによる文と、本シリーズPart 1にも収録タイトルがあるイラストレーターのHanslip Fletcherが描いた情景で構成されています。

20世紀になったばかりのロンドンの、今では古典的と言える内容を広範に扱ったもう一つの著作。マクミラン社の“Highways and Byways”シリーズの一冊で、そのシリーズに多くの建築画を提供したFrederick L. Griggsとロンドンの生活情景のスケッチで有名なHugh Thomsonのイラストに彩られた内容。著者Emily Constanceは、この時代に影響力のあった政治ジャーナリストEdward Tyas Cookと1884年に結婚したこと以外はほとんど知られていませんが、評判のよかったロンドンのガイドブックも書いています。

ロンドンのナイトライフについてのくだけた内容の非公式ガイド。「20世紀の最初の二年間にロンドンの夜に見られた事柄の記録」。内容のほとんどが楽しい事柄だけで、かたや「極悪非道な事柄」は除外されています。著者とイラストレーターがともに視察に出かけ、共同でこの本に仕上げました。Robert Machrayは小説家で海外事情ジャーナリスト、Tom Browneは20世紀転換期に人気のあったイラストレーター。

現在では貴重な「夜の」ロンドンについての短文集。初版はDaily Telegraphで刊行、ロンドンのナイトライフについての暗黒面だけを描き出しているものです。George R. Simsは数多くの劇作、風刺、小説、物語、短編を書き、新聞や雑誌に幅広く寄稿しています。今では主に1880年代の社会ルポルタージュや貧困対策活動、その後の売春や児童虐待に対する活動で知られます。

ロンドンをモダニズム的に描いた初期の作品を合本。
一つ目の著者Huefferはイギリス文学史の重要人物の一人、のちのFord Madox Ford。’08年「イングリッシュ・レビュー」、’24年パリで「トランス・アトランティック・レビュー」を創刊、精力的にハーディ、T.S.エリオット、ジョイス、ヘミングウェー等の作品を掲載しました。小説家として「善良な軍人」(’15年)、四部作「パレーズ・エンド」(’24〜28年)等があります。タイトルの通り「ロンドンの魂」を捉えようとした内容で、著者は「現代ロンドンが醸し出す雰囲気を掴もうとし」たと記しています。
二つ目の著者は文芸評論家で詩人のArthur Symons。1908年に精神疾患を発症した翌年の刊行。本来、文章にアメリカの写真家Alvin Langdon Coburnの写真を加える企画でしたが二人はイギリスで出版を引き受けてくれるところを見つけられず、Coburnの友人でアメリカの書籍商Richard Brooksが文章のみの状態で自費出版で請け負いました。Bénédicte Coste の論文(Polysèmes 15 (2016))で執筆時期は1906年から1907年とされますが、部分的にはそれより早い時期に書かれています。

本書はロンドンの中の自由奔放な暮らしが見られる、画家や作家、風変わりな人々が集うエリアの様子を書き記したものです。主にチェルシー、ソーホー、チャリングクロス、フリート街、ハムステッドに焦点を当て、モダニズム初期の社会の姿を我々に想起させます。画家のスタジオとモデルたち、ソーホーのバーやレストラン、フリート街の出版業界、「語り、飲み、煙草を燻らす」古くからの場所…。著者Arthur Ransomeはジャーナリストで、のちに児童文学『ツバメ号とアマゾン号』シリーズを執筆して第1回カーネギー賞を受賞。本書の挿絵は当時のポスター絵画Fred Taylorによるものです。

著名なロンドンの歴史研究家William John Loftieがロンドン特有の気風について説明するもので、更に長年ロンドンに居住した日本人画家牧野義雄による挿画60点が使われています。牧野は、1897年から1942年までの間ロンドンに居住、Arthur Ransome, Douglas Sladen や M. P. Shielといった人々と親交を結んだ人物です。本書は1907年にChatto & Windus社から刊行、芸術評論家M. H. Spielmannによる本書の牧野作品についての序文と、牧野本人による文章が含まれます。牧野はRansomeのBohemia in Londonにも登場するようです。

Chatto & Windus社は前出と同年にこの、ロンドンの世界を対象にした簡潔な詩と散文のアンソロジーを刊行、「特に現代のロンドンを表現する」ようなセレクションがされたものです。1907年の初版にはイラストがなく、本復刻では牧野による別の12枚の水彩画が掲載された1912年刊行の第二版を用いました。Alfred H. Hyattは20世紀初頭に専門職としての編集業務を生業とした人物です。

読者をエドワード朝期のロンドンを巡る散歩にいざなう内容。始まりはウェリントン公爵家のタウンハウスで「ロンドン一番地」と呼ばれる、ピカデリーのアスプリー・ハウス。著者Edward Verrall Lucasは長期に渡ってPunchや他の雑誌の発行人に加わっていたと同時に、本書のようなガイド書や旅行書をはじめ、あらゆるジャンルで非常に多くの本を書きました。またメシュエン社でリーダーとして勤務、後に社長となっています。本書はそのメシュエン社の「Wanderer」シリーズの中で非常によく売れ、1931年までに28版を数えました。アーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動の画家Nelson Dawson による16枚のカラー図版を備えています。

ロンドンの気風とロンドン庶民の世界を捉えようとした内容。著者Clarence Rookはジャーナリスト、作家で、コックニー小説――ロンドンの労働者階級についての小説で、その多くはイーストエンドが舞台になっている――の代表作の一つである、弊社刊『Slum Fiction』所収のThe Hooligan Nights (1899)の著者として有名です。

先のLondon Side-Lightsと対称的に、メイフェア、セントジェームズ、ピカデリー、ザ・マルといったロンドン中心部の最上流の社会について書いたもの。著者は二人とも、個人教育を受けレジャーやクラブを楽しむエリートの生活様式の中に生まれ育ち、従ってそれらが変化していく様を語るにはうってつけの人物と言えます。NevillはLady Dorothy Nevillの息子で、外交に携わりつつ、ライターとして上流階級についての本を書いています。Jerninghamも著名な一家の出身で、数多くのクラブに出入りしていた典型的な「クラブ通い」でした。またMarmadukeの筆名で軽い噂話などを載せる雑誌の社交欄の記事を長く提供していました。
