本書は、一般向け参考図書の版元として知られるニューヨークのW. H. ワイズ社から、1944年から1949年にかけて全10巻で刊行されました。
第1回配本の5巻はあらゆる戦域での活動の写真記録で、戦争の経過に沿って配列されています。第1巻から第4巻まで（1944年から1946年の刊行分）は1939年9月から1945年8月までの戦争中の6年間を扱っています。第5巻（1946年刊行）は戦後の状況を扱い、さらに戦時中の検閲によって公表されなかった写真を掲載しています。また第1巻から第5巻までを通じた索引が付けられています。
第2回配本の5巻は1946年から1949年にかけて刊行され、第5巻と同様に戦後新たに公表された写真を掲載したものです。アメリカ軍の組織ごとに各巻が構成され、第6巻：海軍、第7巻：空軍（陸軍航空軍）、第8巻：海兵隊、第9巻：陸軍（陸軍地上軍）、第10巻：各支援部隊となっています。また各巻個別に索引が付いています。
最初の5巻の典拠は多様ですが、後半の5巻の記事は軍関係者の執筆、編集によるもので、何千枚もの写真の大部分もアメリカ軍のものです。
