いずれも基本的には20世紀のロンドンを扱いますが、これらはしばしばその過去に立ち戻るもので、18世紀や19世紀のロンドンについても触れているものが多くあります。
今回は、多数の図版によってロンドンを概観するヴィジュアルな資料を3パートに分けて構成しました。この時期に生じた変化を記録した図像記録です。

Part 1

1900年前後において、その後20年か30年の間に消失あるいはその危機にある建造物やランドマークを取り上げた書籍の中で、特に重要視されているタイトルを集成。ヴィクトリア朝時代の暮らしから時が流れ、次の時代へと押しやられたロンドン人の中に去来する古き時代への郷愁が、描画、エッチング、水彩画によって描かれた街並みとともに綴られています。

歴史研究家で水彩画家のP. Normanがロンドンを描き解説したもの。注目すべき建造物やランドマークを巡るように構成され、「発展と破壊が同居する」大都市ロンドン巡りへ我々を連れ出すかのようです。ここで示された建造物の大半は著者の生存中に取り壊されることとなります。本書は限定出版で著者の手による75枚のカラー図版を含みます。

「すでに壊されたり、今後壊される運命にある建造物」が、イラストレーターH. Fletcherのモノクロのエッチングやスケッチで描かれ、W. R. LethabyをはじめA. E. Richardson、 Frank Rutterといった美術・建築評論家の文章を併せて掲載しているもの。

前者は、様々な芸術家によるロンドン情景の選集です。主に現代的に移り変わったロンドンを扱い、対象物ごとに整理して解説、テムズ川とそれに架かる橋、教会、街路と住宅、公共建築と記念碑といったものが取り上げられています。後者は12枚のエッチングそれぞれに、ロンドンの歴史について数多くの著作があるE. B. Chancellorが解説を付けたもの。この2タイトルは共に“The Studio”の刊行で、合本して復刻します。

E. B. Chancellorのこのジャンルでのもう一つの重要著作で、水彩画家J. Crowtherが描いたロンドンの風景画を集めて解説を付したもの。J. Crowtherは1879年にCharles Chadwyck-Healeyの依頼で、急速な拡大と現代化が進むロンドンにおいて保全の危機にある建造物を描く作業に従事、このプロジェクトに15年以上携わり、440枚以上の水彩画といくらかの描画を残し、これらは現在London Metropolitan Archivesに収蔵されています。本書は60枚のCrowther作品を用いて「最近の40年から50年のうちに」失ってしまったものを説明し、かつてのロンドン中心部の情景の中に我々を引き込んでくれます。

Part 2

1920年代のロンドンを詳しく記述したWonderful London全3巻。充実した内容は、19世紀半ばのロンドンを描いて評価の高いチャールズ・ナイトのLondon (1841–44、全6巻) 、前世紀転換期において同様のジョージ・シムズのLiving London (1901–3、全3巻)に比肩する優れたものです。

1920年代のロンドンとロンドン人のあらゆる面を、同時代の作家やジャーナリストが称賛した文章で構成。元々は1926年3月16日号から1927年2月15日号まで隔週毎号48ページで刊行された雑誌で、今では多くは全3巻に製本された形態で残っています。115の章から成り、この当時に「変化し続け、成長し続け、無限に変貌していくロンドンの」変幻自在な姿の全貌を示す意図がありました。序文において編者は、「ネオ・ジョージアン」のロンドンのために、かつて16世紀に出たジョン・ストウ『ロンドン地誌』に比肩するものを目指した、と述べていて、この時代の複数の著者を用いて複数巻で構成された編纂ものとして、より現代的な仕上がりとなっています。収録された文章の書き手は、主に批評家、ジャーナリスト、当時の人気作家で、 Alfred Noyes, Philip Gibbs, Richard Curle, W. Shaw Sparrow, Arthur Machen, W. Pett Ridge, E. Beresford Chancellor, Edwin Pugh, H. M. Tomlinson, H. J. Massingham, Cicely Hamilton, Walter Jerrold, Katherine Tynan, Lawrence Weaver, Ada Chesterton, Lewis Melville, Ralph Nevill, G. K. Chesterton, C. Lewis Hind, George Dilnot, and W. H. Daviesほか多数が関わりました。編集は数多くの著作を残し編集者でもあったArthur St. John Adcock。1200枚以上の撮り下ろしの写真が、「ただ挿入されているだけでなく文章を補足し完全なものにして」本書の価値を高めています。

Part 3

Harold Philip Clunnの3冊を集成。現在でも、この時期のロンドンの変化を記したものの中でベストの著作群と考えられており、三冊合わせると500枚近くの価値のあるモノクロ写真が用いられて詳しく説明されています。また三冊それぞれが異なる年代を扱います。これらはすべて、変化し続ける都市の鮮やかな目撃証言であり、現在なかなか直には手にできない大量の情報を含んだ重要資料です。

1831年あたりから1931年までのおよそ１世紀の間のロンドンの都市としての成長と発展を書いたもの。初版は1932年で、以降繰り返し再版されていますが、本復刻は1937年までの変貌を追加した、第二次世界大戦前における最新改訂である第7版を底本としました。ロンドン中心部を25の街路に沿って説明し、さらに5つの街道を通じて郊外と「周辺の居住区域」まで扱い、周辺部への都市機能拡大の歴史を示しています。
