第二次世界大戦の進捗を伝えるイギリスの週刊誌。
写真を中心に図版15,000点超を収録、詳細なリストが付録。
第二次世界大戦の進捗を伝える、1939年9月から1945年9月までの6年間に313号を刊行した週刊誌を復刻。
およそ2、3か月ごとに製本用のカバーと扉、索引が出され、26巻の装丁版に仕立てられました。全体でおよそ9,000ページ近くにも及ぶ重厚な刊行物で、第1巻から第22巻までは各巻約260ページから320ページ、第23巻から第26巻までが各巻約600ページとなっています。この装丁版を底本にして、第1巻から第22巻までを11冊に合本、第23巻から第26巻まではそのまま4冊で、全15冊で復刻刊行いたします。
本誌はハッチンソン社とライブラリー・プレス社の2社から共同で刊行されました。編者はウォルター・ハッチンソン（1887-1950）、自らの名前を冠した出版社は彼の父が立ち上げたものです。
ハッチンソン社は一般向けの本と雑誌の出版社で、上質なつくりで精緻な図版を用いた配本形式の参考図書――The Living Races of Mankind やMarvels of the Universe、Wonders of the World など――が成功しました。それらによる資金的な伸長で、会社は多くの出版社を吸収、更に印刷会社、製本会社、製紙会社をも取り込んで急速に大企業となっていきました。
またウォルターは第一次世界大戦中に戦争省の出版局長を務めており、その経験からの判断で第二次世界大戦勃発時に大量の紙を購入して在庫したことが、戦時中にも会社の繁栄をもたらすところとなりました。
内容は写真、描画、地図などの15,000点以上に及ぶ大量の視覚素材によって構成されており、第二次世界大戦史研究の図版資料としてとりわけて高い価値があります。また、第一の目的がヴィジュアルの伝達であったものの、当時のニュースは政府や軍部によって厳しく検閲されていたので、同時にイギリスのプロパガンダの道具でもあったともいえるでしょう。
こうした図版中心のページに、軍部指導者や政治家の演説や発表、前週に起きた主要な事件の概要を扱う連載History of the War in Brief、また前線から伝わるニュースや戦時下の女性、「銃後」、植民地や属領の参加、日本との交戦などの様々な事項のテキストが加えられており、戦時中の総合的な情報資料として見ることができるものになっています。
